With the issue of a female Doctor becoming ever more prominent and the likes of Mark Gatiss claiming it’s time a woman was cast in the lead Doctor Who role, current show runner Steven Moffat has now revealed why he himself has never cast a woman.
Speaking to Samira Ahmed at the Hay Festival, Moffat said:
“I didn’t not cast a woman, I cast a man. I didn’t because I wanted to cast Matt Smith and I wanted to cast Peter Capaldi. I didn’t think it was a terrible idea, I just thought, ‘I want to cast those people’ – that was it.”
Fellow Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss recently said he’d love to see a woman in the role, telling the Press Association:
“I would love it to be a woman, I think it would be marvellous, not through pressure of political correctness but it sort of just feels like it’s time. I think it would just be great. The show is not the new kid on the block anymore. It’s been back for 12 years and I think it would just be really thrilling, but a lot of people disagree but I just think, why not…? there’ll be lots of new fans who won’t be [complaining]. And also the old fans who complain will definitely not stop watching it”
you see that makes you really a non long time fan I am 64 have been watching the doctor for over 40 years …and frankly male or female it doesn’t matter …it’s the doctor for chrisakes not your boyfriend or girlfriend ……
Several women have been linked with the soon to be vacant role of the Doctor, those names including Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Natalie Dormer, Hayley Atwell, Tilda Swinton and Olivia Colman.
Atwell, a fan favourite choice, ruled herself out of the part however, as did seemingly did Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Reports from April suggest that the BBC wish to keep the Doctor as a male and that Kris Marshall had already been cast in the part.
Doctor Who returns this coming Saturday with The Empress of Mars, airing at 7:15pm on BBC One and 8/9c on BBC America.

He’s definitely living on another planet if he thinks that the older fans wouldn’t stop watching it

I’m an older long time fan. I would stop watching it if a woman was cast.
I would be delighted if Romana came back.

Vincent Merkel I’m not far of being 60 years. I do think it makes a difference the Doctor being male.
Quiet frankly I don’t like your tone towards me.
Civility doesn’t cost anything.
Another thing don’t you dare to call me a non-fan.
Believe me,you don’t know what you’re talking about.
Finally I’ve watched Dr Who longer than you.
So as we say here, stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Which is fine but they HAVE to stick to the traditions!! I just can’t picture the Doctor as a woman lol We deal with enough change as fans when he regenerates haha

I don’t mind it at all as long as it’s spontaneous

I’ve been watching since 1974 and I won’t be stopping anytime soon, regardless of whoever is cast as the Doctor. You’re simply no longer a fan if you stop watching.

I don’t understand why everyone is so offended by the fact the Doctor is Male …
All the strong female characters in that show and you want to get obsessed about the one …
Quite frankly that makes you obsessive and nothing more ….

Because it would ruin the show and the ratings would go down.

It’s not an issue. People just are complaining because of today’s society. For me the Doctor is a man

Watched since 2005, so not exactly an old viewer, but not brand new. I would certainly stop watching if they made The Doctor female. It isn’t sexism, it would just be terrible.
