A new rumour released on Twitter suggests that the BBC are considering a whole new spin-off series to air between Doctor Who season breaks, one that will not be a continuation of Class.

Martyn Vincent, founding member of The Bad Wilf Podcast, recently Tweeted:

Bad Wilf has made it’s name over the years as one of the leading Doctor Who podcasts and an authority that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

“Bad Wilf started as a London-based Doctor Who podcast but over the months it has grown to include guest contributors from all over the world, with topics ranging from Doctor Who to other sci-fi shows and general chit-chat. We now push ourselves to cover more than just sci-fi. As our motto says: ‘not just any podcast.’”

A new spin-off would almost certainly confirm the cancellation of Class after one series, an outcome that sadly most fans have been expecting after reports of such a move in the press earlier this year, despite assurances from the BBC and Steven Moffat that this wasn’t the case and no decision had been made.

Moffat said in April:

“We don’t know about that right now, we would love to get more Class made. We’re in a different world now of how television works, especially on channels [that are] basically online… Wait and see what’s going to happen… let’s just hope that Coal Hill gets another go.”

Why the younger fans, anyway younger fans could enjoy and 8th Doctor series. We need more onscreen adventures of him could be set during the time war in the events running up to the Night of the Doctor. Could go with the above but an 8th Doctor series would be more popular no more crap lile class.

Crippled from the outset by poor scheduling and promotion, the series’ first episode featuring Peter Capaldi received 660,000 views on the BBC iPlayer. Ratings stayed low throughout the show’s run despite gaining a positive reaction from many sections of the media and a nomination for TV Programme of the Year by the Diversity in Media Awards. None of Class‘ eight episodes made it into the weekly top 50 on-demand shows.

The Guardian wrote:

“Ever since the sad demise of Torchwood, Doctor Who fans have been looking for something to fill those fallow months when the TARDIS is away in another part of the galaxy and Who is missing from our screens. Now they might finally have it.”

While Den of Geek was positively glowing:

“Witty, energetic Doctor Who spin-off Class wears its influences well and gets a great deal right for its target audience.”

What any potential new show could be about has set tongues wagging, with suggestions including a separate Eighth Doctor series, a Clara/Ashildur series, a UNIT series or even the Paternoster Gang having their own show. With no details available beyond the hint of a rumour we are only left with the fun of speculation. Will Chris Chibnall take the helm? or Steven Moffat? Somebody else entirely? will it be adult orientated like Torchwood or child friendly like The Sarah Jane Adventures? Whatever the outcome, we can only hope that any potential new series receives the full support and backing of the powers that be.

“Time will tell.. it always does” - The Seventh Doctor.

Doctor Who returns tomorrow with The Lie of the Land, airing at 19:35 on BBC One and 9/8c on BBC America.
