Tenth Doctor actor David Tennant has spoken out strongly against Donald Trump, the controversial tycoon who is campaigning for the Republican nomination for President in the U.S.

Speaking to The Daily Beast during promotion for his new role in Netflix’s Jessica Jones, Tennant says he hopes it’s “all over” for the billionaire:

“It seems grotesque to apply the word ‘expert’ to Donald Trump, although clearly he’s doing something right, let’s hope he’s finally gone too far and it’s all over.”

Trump, who according to CBS currently leads the Republican pack with thirty-five percent of Republican primary voters support, has caused outrage around the world following his remarks calling for a ban on Muslim immigration into the United States. The continuing popularity of Trump, despite previous remarks against Mexicans and women, has alarmed Tennant:

“People can apparently say the most appalling things and get away with it and go from success to success in terms of their poll numbers. It seems like he might have gone too far, but I feel like we’ve said that a few times over the last few months, and it’s only gone the other way.”

David sees Trump’s rise as “trade[ing] on people’s fear rather than hopes”, comparing the former Apprentice star to UKIP’s Nigel Farage in the UK:

“Clearly people are attracted to that kind of plain-speaking, tell-it-like-it-is politician who often seems to trade on people’s fear rather than people’s hopes. They talk about building a better country but their building blocks are about making us afraid and wanting to close ourselves down.”

All episodes of Jessica Jones were released on November 20th on Netflix. David Tennant will return to the role of the Doctor in The Tenth Doctor Adventures from Big Finish Productions, available in 2016.
