DWW Readers Comment on What They’d Like to See in Series 9

With production now underway for Series 9 and thoughts now turning to what we may see during the impending Series, we asked DWW readers their thoughts on what they’d like to see. Here’s a selection of the comments:

There were calls for the returns of old friends in the 10th anniversary season, not least Gallifrey:

“Rest the Daleks and the Cybermen - less is more there. If possible, make Christopher Eccleston An Offer He Can’t Refuse for an appearance in a Nu Who tenth anniversary special. A one episode appearance of Susan and Ian Chesterton and yes, an unresolved story arc about searching for Gallifrey.” - David Bishop

“Bring back some of the other friends like jack and get our trio of friends madam vastra and strax and river.Get a story line that keeps going for a few weeks like you did with the pandorica but with him finding gallifrey.” - Phil Bryant

“I think the hunt for Gallifrey should be the over arcing storyline of series 9, I think there should be more humour, it should be more adult and definitely darker, more horror. I like it when they balance horror with humour” - Anthony Luculano

“Defo search for Gallifrey but other than that the tone for series 09 should continue to develop evolve as series 08 did as I think it was the best season since series 05″ - Gary Hewitt

The tone the series should take was a hot topic, with many hoping for something lighter in the coming Series:

“I definitely think that Series 9 should have a tone, similar to Series 8, but a little lighter. We’ve seen Twelve act a bit light-hearted and funny, but capable of balancing it out with his darker persona. I think the Daleks and Cybermen and The Master should be avoided. I would like him to be searching for Gallifrey. This should be Clara’s last season and Shona from the Last Christmas special should come back and be a companion.” - Paul Lara

“Keep it dark, search for gallifry and a few more cliff hangers. The suspense is what makes doctor who so enjoyable for me, but those are just my opinions.” - Trash McCann

“good writing not to dark and have some fun maybe get some of the other people to come back for visits way cool, i have been a fan from the very first doc who that witers and all back room people are very cool thanks keep up the good work bye for now fan from australia, formally from the uk.” - Patricia Rowden

“I think to balance it out more there should be a mix of complex and simpler plots so it doesn’t bombard you every week. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to watch without thinking too much! I also think less of the ‘shut up’ s and more of the funny side that we ALL know exists would really help the show. Don’t get me wrong, too much simplicity or humour isn’t great but the right balance aand a few subtle digs here and there won’t hurt anyone. And what happened to the Doctor being the main character? We’re seeing an awful lot of Clara as many have stated already and not enough Doctor!” - Lauren Senkiw-Smith

“a good balance of horror, humour and psychological trickery should be used, and I would love to see a series where there is actually no resolution that saves lives and the doctor must become a fugative, hunted across the universe, still seeking for galifrey” - Owen Jackson

“I think the show should have overall lighter tones, it is supposed to be a family show and there desperately needs to be some better written stories. The writers seem to be running out of ideas and I hate to see this beloved show bleeding to death because of poor storylines. I think we all know that the last few seasons have not lived up to previous ones. There are some amazing actors/characters in Doctor Who and I am trying to like Peter Capaldi as much as I liked Smith, but he is continuously overshadowed by ridiculously poor writing.” - Lucy Davies

And others hoped for a more traditional approach to the Doctor/Companion dynamic:

“Much, much less Clara would be a start!” - Jacqui Rowe

“More Doctor, way less Clara. We call it “Clara Who” in our house. Been a fan of the show for 40 years, but was disappointed with the show last season. We like the new Doctor… Dislike his companion… With Clara staying I may not bother watching the next season.” - Grant Chapman

“More Doctor, less Clara. More actual events explained via Doctor involvement-think Agatha Christie, Van Gogh etc etc. re-connection with beings of other planets-Ood? But Moffat doesn’t care what the fans want, IMHO.” - Connie Faivre

“I do like the idea of the search for Gallifrey story arc. Overall I would personally like the plots less convoluted, no Daleks, Cybermen or Master/Missy and more emphasis on the Doctor rather than Clara. I felt that in series 8 it felt more like her show than Peter Capaldi’s.” - Patrick Leach

“More cohesive plots, less timey- wimey Moffaty-woffaty. Cut out the crap season arcs. And make the Doctor the main character in his own show, not the damned Companion or the supporting sidekicks!” - Eric Hurd
