Lancashire Science Festival Presents Doctor Who: The Science Behind the Scenes on Saturday 16 November 2013, 09:30am - 16:00pm in the Darwin Building, University of Central Lancashire, Marsh Lane, Preston, PR1 2HE.

£5 for full day entry (access to all sessions), free entry to the festival activities (excluding sessions) and free parking (see details on their website)

“To celebrate 50 years of Doctor Who, the Lancashire Science Festival proudly presents Doctor Who: The Science Behind the Scenes. Have you ever wondered whether the Doctor’s time travelling antics were really possible? And if so, how? Please note that this event is aimed at ages 12 and above.”

Doctor Who Screenwriter Stephen Gallagher will be attending the festival and giving a Q&A (paid tickets only) and Autograph Signing Session at 1pm!

The festival will include presentations from leading experts on all things Doctor Who including:

  • Is Doctor Who a Modern Doctor?
  • Creating Worlds for Doctor Who: The Science Behind the Illusion
  • The Psychology of DoctorWho
  • Is Time Travel Possible?

Throughout the day there will also be:

  • Workshops with the Doctor Who costumed Hyde Fundraisers including make-up, costume, mask-making and set design and timed photo opportunities with key characters
  • Meet the experts Q&A sessions
  • Paul’s Real Deal - bring along your Doctor Who toys and other sci-fi memorabilia and have them assessed and valued by our resident Doctor Who expert
  • Screenings of classic Doctor Who episodes
  • Q&A Session with Doctor Who Screenwriter Stephen Gallagher

10.00-10:45 Doctor Who: Science Fact or Science Fiction?

How close are we to time travel? What is a sonic screwdriver? And how can the Tardis possibly be that roomy? Find out the answers to these questions as Dr Matt Dickinson presents the science fact behind the science fiction.

11:00-11:45 Is Doctor Who a Modern Doctor?

Is Doctor Who an eptiome of a modern doctor? What extra qualities would he bring? What type of doctor would he be? And what would he make of the modern day NHS? Or should we be grateful that he doesn’t practise medicine? This will be a light-hearted look at whether the doctor deserves his title.

12.00-12:45 Creating Worlds for Doctor Who: The Science Behind the Illusion

Find out about the various techniques used to portray alien worlds on our TV screens over the past 50 years, and how changes in production technology and the way of making TV shows has shaped how Doctor Who has developed.

13:00-13:30 Q&A Session with Stephen Gallagher

Stephen Gallagher wrote ‘Warrior’s Gate’ in 1981 in which Tom Baker played Doctor Who and ‘Terminus’ in 1984 in which Peter Davison played the good doctor. He has also written extensively for screen (including Bugs, Chimera, Chiller, Murder Rooms and more. He is the creator of Eleventh Hour and was the lead writer on Crusoe) and is now an acclaimed author of several novels and short story collections, ranging from period horror to modern thrillers.

13.45-14.30 The Psychology of Doctor Who

We know that the Doctor has two hearts but what is going on in his head? Can we really understand the Doctor’s moods and motivations? How does regeneration affect him? Why does he strive to save the human race? And what impact does traveling in time and space have on the Doctor’s long suffering companions? Find out  the answers to these questions as Sarita Robinson explores both human and alien psychology.

14:45-15:30 Is Time Travel Possible?

Is time travel really an option? James Davies will guide you on a journey looking at the physics of time travel theory. What is the connection with Quantum Mechanics? What’s the deal with Worm Holes? Find out answers to these issues and many more to help you make your own decision.
