Big Finish have announced that Paul McGann will be joined by a brand new companion for the much anticipated The Time War series – Bliss, portrayed by Rakhee Thakrar.
Best known perhaps for her role in Eastenders as Shabnam Masood, Thakrar has also starred in Peep Show, The Jury, DCI Banks, Doctors and Holby City.
Rakee is excited by the role, telling Big Finish it was an “absolute dream”
“Getting to voice the role of Bliss alongside the Doctor is an absolute dream, she’s a character who I’d like to be more like; someone who puts aside her own fear to help others. I think Big Finish have created a great companion with Bliss, she’s incredibly bright but is not excluded from making mistakes and having a sense of humour. I find her very real, and she’s a joy to play. I’m thoroughly excited to join the Doctor Who team.”
Producer David Richardson said meanwhile:
“He may be trying to avoid getting embroiled in the Time War, but the Eighth Doctor has found a new friend who knows how to blow up a Dalek – enter Bliss, a scientist trying to stay alive in the heat of temporal battle. Matt Fitton wrote the part for Rakhee Thakrar, and it was lovely when Rakhee accepted the part with such total delight. She’s brilliant and lovely and fits right in with the ever growing Big Finish family.”
Reports in the Radio Times in 2016 suggested Rakee was one of several names under consideration to replace Jenna Coleman alongside Peter Capaldi for the ongoing Series 10 of the show, a role eventually filled by Pearl Mackie.
Comprising four box-sets, the audio adventures are scheduled to begin this November with Volume One and the second, third and fourth series’ will be released yearly from July 2018.
Doctor Who: The Time War – Volume 1 will be released in November 2017 and is available to preorder now from BigFinish.com.
